Asian Women's Support Group

The Asian Women's Support Group is open to all Asian women living in Kilburn and West Hampstead. The West Hampstead Women's Centre provides a safe space for women to meet and discuss issues concerning the Asian Community.

We offer the following services:

Asian Women's Social Group Meeting

Asian Womens' Social Group

Wednesdays
1.30pm - 4.00pm

This group has been running for over 15 years and has now 95 regular members.

The women get together to cook, eat and socialize. There are discussions on health, education, social issues, women's rights and politics back home.

It is a safe place for Asian women to voice concern about physical and mental health along with sharing family news. Anything under the sun is discussed over lots of cups of tea.

Asian women walking as part of the Asian Women's Health Group

Asian Women's Health Calendar

Last Wednesday of the month
1.00pm - 3.00pm.

This monthly session for Asian women is a unique mix of health education and physical activity, and aims to improve health awareness, reduce coronary heart disease and related conditions, as well as accident and injury amongst Asian women and their families.

This group boasts significant volunteer involvement, with many women taking regular part in organizing activities and carrying out specific duties such as buying ingredients for cooking activities, doing the register etc on a regular basis.

Each session starts with chair based exercises or a local walk, followed by an informative session led by an Asian Health Professional explaining health related issues simply and clearly and finally questions and answers. Interpreters are always available.

The sessions are fun and interactive and give the women a chance to build knowledge and confidence. During a recent consultation 30% of the women reported they had taken up beneficial lifestyle choices and improved their health.

Two Asian Women together who belong to the Asian Women's Good Neighbourhood Scheme

Asian Women's Good Neighbourhood Scheme

Volunteers from the group look after women who are ill or house bound and live in Kilburn and West Hampstead.

This befriending scheme for South Asian women has developed out of the Asian Women’s Social group and is co-ordinated and run entirely by volunteers.

There are many women volunteering to provide peer support to other women in the community. Our aim is to give this work a greater level of recognition and to encourage our volunteers to value the skills they provide and offer.

Arts and craft class for carers

Arts and Craft Classes for Carers

Wednesdays
10.30am - 12.30pm

This class offers carers a chance to learn new skills and make beautiful things whilst supporting each other.

The class used to be part of the Asian Women's Support Group but is now open to all female carers, a change welcomed by its current members.

Asian Young Women's Group

This is a social and educational group for young Asian women aged 12-19.

The group is currently run during the school holidays but we hope to also run this group during term-time in the future.

The group aims to reduce isolation amongst Asian girls and improve self image and self respect.

We provide a mix of fun activities such as Nail Art, Henna Painting, visits to the theatre with more informative sessions such as First Aid Training and facilitator led discussions.
